Stoppages: When the Fight Ends Inside the Distance

A bout that finishes before the final bell is classified under one of several stoppage categories based on how the ending occurred:

  • Knockout (KO): A boxer is knocked down and fails to stand up and beat the referee's 10-count.
  • Technical Knockout (TKO): The referee steps in to stop the fight because a fighter cannot safely defend themselves, a ringside doctor waves off the bout due to a severe cut/injury, or the fighter's corner throws in the towel.
  • Corner Retirement (RTD): A boxer voluntarily quits on their stool between rounds or their corner informs the referee they will not answer the next bell.
  • Disqualification (DQ): A fighter is disqualified by the referee for persistent intentional fouls (e.g., biting, intentional headbutts, hitting after the bell).

Technical Decisions & Accidental Clashes

When an accidental head clash or foul causes a cut so severe that the doctor halts the fight after four completed rounds, the bout goes to a Technical Decision (TD). The judges' scorecards are calculated up to that moment to declare the winner.
